Veterinary acupuncture is a technique than can be used to treat a wide range of health conditions. It has been used in veterinary practice for thousands of years, originating in China.
It involves the insertion of small, fine gauge needles into specific points on the body to produce a healing response. Each acupuncture point has specific functions that can have many beneficial effects on the body.
Acupuncture stimulates the body’s own healing processes and is a safe modality that can be used alone or alongside traditional Western medicine.
Conditions that are commonly treated with acupuncture include osteoarthritis, chronic pain, injuries, non-healing wounds, gastrointestinal disease and for palliative care.
Animals tolerate acupuncture very well, and most even enjoy their treatments. In animals that don’t tolerate needles well, or for painful areas a laser can be used to stimulate the acupuncture points instead of using needles.
Dr Jackie is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist with the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) and has been using acupuncture alongside Western medicine for several years.
