Winning Grin Club – Dentistry
Join the club! Having fresh breath and pearly whites is not only a pleasure for you, but essential for your pet’s health.
Did you know that 75% of cats and dogs presenting to a vet clinic have some level of dental disease?
And that 70% of cats and 80% of dogs (100% of small breeds) have dental disease by the age of 3?
Dental disease not only causes smelly kisses, but can also lead to:
- Pain (often underestimated as animals are very good at hiding it)
- Chronic infection and inflammation such as chronic cough
- Heart, liver and kidney failure
- Predisposition to diabetes due to insulin resistance
- Dental disease has also been linked to dementia, arthritis and pancreatitis
At Mansfield Vet Clinic we feel very passionately about dental hygiene. We offer free dental checks with our nurses to assess the level of dental disease in your pet and recommend early intervention whenever possible. It can, however, be difficult to assess the extent of dental disease in the conscious animal. A full assessment of dental health is made under general anaesthesia, and also involves taking dental radiographs to assess tooth roots.
Remember, pets don’t brush their teeth like we do (although you can do it for them), so many pets will need a prophylactic dental every 6 – 12 months to keep up that Winning Grin.
